How to Set the Correct Weight Loss Goal

Want to lose weight? First up, grab the measuring tape and do some calculations!

If you choose an unrealistic number your chances of sucess dwindle and your changes of feeling like you've failed your weight loss goals dramatically increase. So rather than choosing digits at random, grab the measuring tape and do some calculations.

Start small

"The first thing to say is that if you are very overweight, success should not be judged on meeting some idealistic goal weight," says practising dietitian and nutritionist Dr Joanna McMillan.

"By losing only seven per cent of your body weight, you dramatically reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases associated with being overweight.

"Small, achievable goals are much more inspiring. Once you get there, you can always make another, but setting the bar too high often ends up being demoralising."

Monitor progress

She suggests using measurements to monitor progress and setting goals other than weight.

"Ideal weight ranges use BMI and that has inherent problems," the Sydney based expert explains.

"It doesn't assess how much muscle and body fat you have. A better measure is your waist measurement. Low risk for women is a waist less than 80 cm, and they are at substantial risk if over 88 cm. For men, those cut-offs are 94 cm and 102 cm."

Those last few kilos...

Also consider why you want to lose weight. And do you actually need to? Those last two or three kilos may never fall off if you are already at the right weight for your body. Maybe you have plateaued for a reason.

"A good way to determine this is to shift your mindset from weight to health," Lewis says.

"Examine your habits and make personal and permanent changes to what and why you eat for reasons of health and let weight loss happen if it's right for you – how liberating!"

Fitness: Maintain or Gain?

Can you clock fewer hours at the gym and still maintain or improve your fitness? PT Scott Hunt shows us how.

As it turns out, the 'more is more' mentality ignores the human body's finely tuned mechanics, and when it comes to working out, less can be a whole lot more.

So, how do we get fitter?
Personal trainer Scott Hunt from Fitness Enhancement says anything more than what you're doing now is a plus.

"If you've gone from doing nothing to doing half an hour a week, I'd say that's a 100 per cent improvement," says Hunt. "But it depends on how quickly you want results; think of it like a 10-kilometre drive: you could walk all the way and it would take you a long time, or you could floor it."

The fitness adaptions you create in your body are – like the maintenance of your fitness – dependent on the frequency, intensity and type of exercise, as well as the time dedicated to each session.

"To me it's more about how many sessions they can fit in each week. Sure, in an ideal world, people would exercise six days a week, but it's not an ideal world, and most people's motivation is far from ideal!"

The fact that you may not have the time or inclination to live in the gym doesn't have to quash your results, as long as you amp up the intensity to match.

"We find that for most people who want amazing results, training three days a week is plenty. The key to success here is quality, not quantity, and, of course, sticking to the plan nutritionally each and every day."

Kilojoule-burning cardio fitness is great when maintaining your weight and cardiovascular health, but so is laying on metabolism-boosting muscle. So mixing up your routine with both is ideal.

Muscle
Maintain: "If you've only got three days, work your whole body each day you train," says Hunt. "If you're finding you're not recovered enough in between sessions, the good news is you're training hard enough to fatigue yourself that much so you can adapt it to a split program – training the lower body and abs for one session and upper body the next," he says.

Gain: "When your current weights get too easy, change them up for heavier ones. It's important to ensure you're always challenging your muscles – I'd say you could change your program almost weekly depending on where you're at."

Cardio fitness
Maintain: "Aim for at least one session a week where your heart rate is consistently elevated – like a one-hour run or bike ride at a steady pace – and aim for at least one where your heart rate is up and down, like interval or sprint training," says Hunt.

Gain: "Add in a muscular endurance session," says Hunt. "Essentially a strength-training program but with light weights and high reps and no breaks in between sets. While you will, of course, get strength conditioning out of this, the high reps make it much more aerobic. The goal of this session is to build that endurance in your muscles for when your lungs are doing great thanks to all the long runs, but your muscles are crying out for you to stop."

5 Reasons to Start Yoga

Thinking about taking up yoga? The mental and physical rewards of yoga are well worth it -- relaxation, better sleep, increased concentration and more. If you’ve been trying to muster up the motivation to begin practicing yoga but need a bit more inspiration, read on for 5 reasons to get on board this healthy bandwagon.

1. Yoga Clears Out Mind Clutter
In today’s always-on-the-run world, your mind may be constantly spinning -- thinking about what happened previously, what’s currently going on and what’s next on your to-do list. Yoga can help you stay in the present moment and clear your head. “Things can cause us stress because we hold on to them and let them create stories in our mind, which takes up our precious time,” says Jessica Ray, yoga teacher at Back Bay Yoga Studio in Boston. She feels the practice “helps clear it all out.”

2. Yoga Improves Your Mood
If you’re feeling blue, yoga can provide a natural pick-me-up. A 2011 study from Boston University School of Medicine found that yoga improved the moods and decreased the anxiety of 19 yogis over a 12-week period. This is attributed to the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, which increase when you practice yoga. Other studies have found links between low GABA levels and depression. So pull out that yoga mat and improve your health and happiness.

3. Yoga Helps You Sleep
If you find yourself tossing and turning at night, yoga may help you sleep more soundly. A 2004 study published in the Journal of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback found that yoga reduced awakenings that contributes to insomnia. Participants reported better sleep efficiency, sleeping longer and waking less frequently during the night, among other improvements. Add some oms to your routine and you may find it easier to catch some Z's.

4. Yoga Relieves Stress
If you feel stressed from work or other demands, Jessica Ray, yoga teacher at Back Bay Yoga Studio, recommends releasing your worries through yoga. “Just the simple act of taking a few deep breaths can help ease the mind and reduce stress as your body moves through poses,” she says. “As you incorporate breath into each movement, the muscles in the body begin to relax and the places we hold our stress and tension start to release.” Have a big presentation coming up? Roll out the yoga mat and run through a few sun salutations or simply sit quietly and meditate, focusing on the in and out of each breath.

5. Yoga Teaches You to Breathe Again
Deep breathing can relax you and help you deal with stress better. A large part of yoga centers on the breath. “Yoga teaches you to breathe not only when it’s easy, but also when things are difficult,” says Laura Burkhart, San Francisco-based yoga teacher. It may sound silly, but when you are constantly on the go or in stressful situations, you sometimes forget to breathe -- at least productively. The slow, deep-breathing techniques you learn in yoga can help in tense circumstances when you might find yourself taking quick, shallow breaths.

Suitable Exercise at Your Own Pace - Over 50's

Don't know about you but I still feel like I did when I was in my 20s. It’s just when I look in the mirror reality hits back. For some of us, it’s when you start to play with the grandkids and the following day you can’t move or playing with them is just not an option any more. That’s when your body reminds you that you are not as young as you used to be. So is this it? Is this what we are happy to live with? We are old and we have to act old? No, I say, stepping down from my soap box and getting a little less dramatic. I work with chronically ill people with chronic heart and lung disease and I can tell you now we all benefit from regular exercise.

Whether it’s a knee, hip replacement, chronic disease or you just haven’t moved for a while, you can and will benefit from regular exercise. Now I am not suggesting a marathon nor am I saying to get those footy shorts or netball skirt out from mothballs. I’m suggesting exercise suitable for you at a pace you can manage and slowly improve on. Yes, you do have to consult your doctor first, but once you have the all clear there is a plethora of choices in fitness classes and programs you can choose from nowadays. So for those of you who have fitness facilities at work start today not Monday, today. Engage a personal trainer, walk in the pool or on the treadmill. Ten minutes of exercise today was more than what you did yesterday.

Most of you will be goal-orientated so set a goal i.e.; (an easy one first) to be able to walk up the stairs without having to talk in sign language when I reach the top. Work out with a friend and motivate each other. Make a challenge at work or with a group of friends to be fitter, healthier and slimmer. Celebrate the positives - “dropped two sizes in clothing” etc These challenges work as a starter but for any long-term fitness program to work it has to be maintained. Remember, to put more quality in your life it’s a fulltime commitment. For those who are saying I can’t because I have chronic back problems, joint replacements etc., my answer is yes, you can.

There are so many exercise choices you can access nowadays. Ask your doctor for advice on the nearest Heartmoves, Lungs in Action, Vietnam Vets, Lift for Life program near you. So what are you waiting for? There are places to see, golf ranges to play and life to be lived. As the Nike brand says, Just do it! Dolphins Health Precinct has a wide variety of classes suitable for over 50s. Call in for information today.
