Body Overhaul Challenge Will Kick Off Soon!

DOES this look like your New Year’s resolution list?

1. Get fit
2. Lose weight
3. Gain muscle
4. Eat healthier
5. Feel better

Time to get into the best shape of your life! Dolphins Health Precinct Body Overhaul Challenge kicks off on February 21 and promises to enable you to change how you look, feel and think about health, fitness and wellbeing.

This challenge provides a holistic approach to achieving optimal health. Over 12 weeks our training team will put you through a step-by-step guide to transform your body, lifestyle, mind and focus to allow you to become the best you can be.

“We had phenomenal results last season and our trainers are keen to assist their clients in achieving equal or better results this time around,” said DHP PT supervisor Angela Mitrovic.

DHP’s PT team has expertise in fitness and exercise physiology, nutrition and sports psychology and they can provide you with the ongoing guidance, support and information throughout the challenge to supplement and enhance your training program.

This ensures that you not only achieve real life changing results during the program but that you learn the skills and develop the mindset to maintain that change as you continue on your fitness journey.

The challenge focuses on an overall goal achievement of the winner and not based on weight loss as the main criteria.

The total fat loss from the last challenge was 112.7kg with total centimetres loss of 707.5. Robyn Doyle and Mark South took top spot, with both winning $500 worth of the $1500 plus prize pool of training equipment supplied by Hart Sport, boxing gear supplied by RIPT, free personal training sessions and vouchers supplied by local business in the area.

What a Champion - Teneka Hyndman

2014 is shaping up to be another fantastic year for Teneka Hyndman - Personal Trainer and Professional “Figure” Competitor in ‘Natural Body Building’.
After competing overseas in the 2014 INBA/PNBA Natural Universe, she returned with a 3rd Place International Title in the Pro Figure Class. After which she competed on home turf, in the INBA QLD State Competition and won the Figure International Class 2 (Tall) at the recent Body Building Championships held at the Sleeman Centre in Chandelor.
Her journey has been full of accolades and some heart break along the way; 2014 certainly looks like it’s Teneka’s year.
“I have lived in Redcliffe now for almost 3 years and it’s my home. Having left my family, who still live in Auckland, NZ; I have come to love our local community spirit and the atmosphere ‘vibe’ at Dolphins Health Precinct. The Pennisula is my ‘home away from home’; the support, and friendship has been a blessing”.
“I’m right on track with my preparation and I’m confident I can bring home the gold. However I am also gracious in saying ‘may the best athlete win’”. When asked why she choose body building as a sport Teneka said, ‘I have always admired beautifully toned athletes and thought one day I would aspire to being in the best possible condition my body could achieve! Each year, my body continues to develop which motivates me to test the threshold of my ultimate potential.’”

The last two upcoming events for Teneka are: INBA Australia Nationals, she competes on the Sunday 5th October, at the Sleeman Centre, Chandelor. Her final event for the year is an International Competition, the 2014 INBA/PNBA Natural Olympia, held in San Diego, CA, USA; the long weekend of 7-9 November. God bless Australia!!!

The Results are In: Body Overhaul Challenge

The Personal Training team with the winners and runner ups

Left to right: Female winner Sue Althaus,
Personal Trainer Angela Mitrovic, male winner Craig Althaus

Dolphins Health Precinct Body Overhaul Challenge 2014

The start of February 2014 saw the commencement of DHP’s 12 week Body Overhaul Challenge.

The Challenge was the first in what will be periodical programs to be run by the DHP Personal Training Department. The challenge took 36 members through a series of educational seminars, and personal training sessions.

It certainly wasn’t an easy task, and I’m sure for most there were some tough times. Let’s face it changing your habits by developing new ones does not always come easy. But the results at the end of the period are OUTSTANDING to say the least!

Our male runner up was Beau Devine with Craig Althaus taking out the winner’s title.

Our female runner up was Suzanne Bell with Sue Althaus taking out the other winner’s title. It was truly amazing to see a husband and wife not only change their whole lifestyle together but to also be crowned the winners of the DHP Body Overhaul Challenge together.
  • In total the whole group lost an incredible 171.40 kilos.
  • Collectively the whole group also lost 971.50 centimetres.
We have to say that we are immensely proud of the achievements of this group. The dedication shown was simply inspirational and we sincerely hope that we have made a change to the lives of these members; changes that they can take away and use for the rest of their lives.

Here are some of the comments from members who took up the challenge:
  • “Thanks for the support I got during this challenge from the gym”
  • “There was so much to learn and so much knowledge given.”
  • “Loved the challenge feeling pumped and motivated to continue”
At Dolphins Health Precinct we are dedicated to making a difference, so if you are keen to take the first step call the team at Dolphins on 3880 3729 and put your name down on our waiting list for details on our next Body Overhaul Challenge!

Get Your Body Ready For Spring!

Time passes so quickly sometimes that seasons often take us by surprise. Never is that more apparent than the arrival of spring and that first hint of warm weather that reminds us just how long it’s been since we’ve tried on those shorts we have stuffed in the bottom of the drawer. Warm weather also brings a renewed interest in those New Year’s resolutions we made so long ago and, perhaps, stopped working towards sometime during the dreary winter months. As a result, many people find they’re starting all over again, eager to get their bodies ready for spring. While you can’t make drastic changes in just a few weeks, it is possible to get back on the workout track and make some progress before you box up the sweaters and head outside. So here are some tips to get you ready for your best spring/summer yet!

  1. Don’t diet. Yep, that’s what it says. Diets actually slow down your metabolism, which causes you to gain weight. When you lose weight by dieting alone, you also lose muscle mass. The loss of your muscle will slow down your metabolism. Instead, eat at least four to five small meals a day. This will help your body burn the fuel most efficiently.
  2. Don’t drink your calories. Unless you are juicing your own fruits and vegetables, soft drinks and many juices have very little nutritional value. These extra calories are added to your day and the first ones you should drop. If you were to replace just one caloric drink a day with water, you can lose two pounds a month.
  3. Change it up. Chances are you wouldn’t have even started reading this article if what you’re currently doing was working for you. You’ve hit a plateau from doing that same old routine over and over. It’s time to change it up! It is crucial to always confuse your muscles to ensure you get the most out of your workout. If muscle confusion confuses you, you might consider consulting a fitness expert, like the ones at Dolphins Health Precinct.
  4. Incorporate high-intensity interval workouts. We all have busy schedules and group fitness workouts can be an effective way to tone and get into shape, choose RIPPLE EFFX programs two to three times a week. With R.E workouts, you get the most bang for your buck. You’ll get more out of your workout in 20 minutes of interval training than most people on the elliptical for an hour.
  5. Pass on the salt. High-salt foods cause your body to retain water, which gives you a bloated belly. To get rid of excess salt and water weight, actually drink more water. Water helps flush the salt from your system. You can shed that bloat with this one tip.
  6. Make a small change — and stick to it. Make one goal to yourself at a time. Maybe it’s removing soft drink from your lunch or moving for five minutes a day. Just make it attainable and commit to it. Once you master that first goal, you can add another to it, and so on
  7. Be realistic. As much as we’d all love to drop 3 to 5 kilos in a week — especially as summer approaches — it’s not very doable without going to extreme measures. Instead, strive to lose 1 per cent of your body weight a week that’s a healthy goal.
  8. Eat real food. Forget the packaged diet dinners and low-fat snacks. Fresh fruits and vegetables are higher in nutrients than processed meals — plus, they’re rich in fibre, which will keep you feeling fuller longer. Lean meats like chicken and fish are high in protein and will help you burn more fat while building muscle mass. And yes, you can put some steak on the BBQ — just eat it in moderation. The calorie count is higher in red meat, so opt for palm-sized portions instead of the four ounces you would eat of chicken or fish.
  9. Don’t skip carbs. Just remember that not all carbohydrates are created equal: White bread, rice and sweets are nutritionally poor, but sweet potatoes, brown rice, oats and whole-grain bread are both delicious and healthy.
  10. Join a gym. Train at a place with people who care and will support you. Dolphins Health Precinct has programs and variety for all ages and fitness levels. As always, be sure to exercise responsibly and consult with a fitness expert to ensure you use proper form. Summer and warmer weather will be here before you know it, so get started right away to show off your physical fitness and summer-ready body. Call Dolphins Health Precinct now.

Well Done Lisa!

Lisa before the race with her children

Lisa after the race soaking up the sun wrapped in a warm towel!

Lisa Maclean (DHP Learn to Swim Instructor) participated in the Coolangatta Body Science Series on the weekend. Lisa did SO well, with a recorded time of 35.40min and came 3rd out of approx 15 in the 30-49 years category.

Considering the water was only 17ÂșC, this is what Lisa was quoted as saying:

“Conditions were probably the most challenging part of the swim with the swell, coldness and current that were all against me and my head! But the next one’s in 2 weeks, and I’m up for yet another challenge...a WIN!” – Lisa Maclean

"With only one week of training...imagine what she could do with a bit of prep!!" - Sandra Hegarty - Learn to Swim Coordinator.

Well done Lisa, an impressive effort!

7 of the Best Body Weight Exercises

Squat
One of the best exercises is also one of the most natural (just watch a baby sit). This movement works all of the muscles in the lower body including the quads, glutes and hamstrings. It also provides an extra kick for the core as you need your deep abdominal muscles and back to perform this exercise correctly.

Pushup
This is one of the best upper body exercises because it works everything from your chest to your back, your arms and even your abs. Make sure your shoulders line up with your wrists and you tuck your elbows towards your sides (and don’t flare out your elbows wide). Try to get your chest and hips as close to the floor as possible without touching.

Bridge
The bridge (also called a hip raise or extension) will strengthen your glutes and hamstrings, while also working your abdominals, back and inner thighs. For a fun variation, lift your hips with your feet flat on the floor and slowly extend one leg long into the sky.

Lunge
Start with feet together and arms resting comfortably by your sides. Step forward with your right foot and lower your body until your front knee is at 90 degrees and your knee is not touching the floor. Then, to complete the exercise, push off of your front right foot while straightening your left leg. Keep your right foot off of the floor and balance with your right thigh parallel to the floor.

Plank
The plank has become one of the key go to exercises to define your core. If you are struggling to maintain the arms straight position try this exercise on your forearms. Be sure to align your elbows and shoulders and keep your hips, heels and shoulders at the same height.

Single Leg Deadlift
This is one of the best hamstring, glute and core exercises, and it works the muscles on the backside of your body that are typically ignored. Stand on one leg with your knee slightly bent, and without changing the bend in your knee, bend at your hips and lower your torso until it’s parallel to the floor. Pause, then return to the start. Do all reps, and then switch legs and repeat.

Burpees
The great thing about burpees are that they combine cardio and strength into one exercise. A burpee is a complex total body exercise that will work your upper and lower body at the same time with a strong focus on the core. For an added cardio punch, add a full standing jump into the mix before the squat.
