JETTY TO JETTY ONLY 4 WEEKS AWAY

We are all aware of the perks of running; less stress, better heart health and even an easier time slipping into your jeans. But even the most disciplined person can find themselves requiring extra motivation. One of my favorite quotes states, "Once you've succeeded at a challenge, you need new ways to test your limits”.

We all have goals and dreams but it can be difficult to stick with them. Every week I hear people say that they start with good intentions but they can’t seem to maintain their consistency for a long period of time. The other one I hear all the time is that they struggle with mental endurance. Clients often get started at something but then they can’t seem to follow through or stay focused for very long. Don’t worry, I am just as guilty of this as anyone else. The result of this is people often end up disheartened when they lose focus or motivation because they think that successful people have some unstoppable passion and willpower that they seem to be missing. Now here is the reality.

Successful people feel the same boredom and the same lack of motivation that everyone else feels. They don’t have some magic pill that makes them feel ready and inspired every day. The difference is that the people who stick with their goals don’t let their emotions determine their actions. Top performers still find a way to show up, to work through the boredom and to embrace the daily practice that is required to achieve their goals.

It's this ability to do the work when it’s not easy that separates the top performers from everyone else. Anyone can work hard when they feel motivated however the defining question is can you continue to work out when you are bored? What about when the work out isn’t easy? What about when it feels like nobody is paying attention or you’re not getting the results you want? It’s the ability to work when work isn’t easy that makes the difference.

So with this is mind, here are a few tips that can help:

Stay Positive
Finish runs feeling strong and happy, not worn-out. It'll keep you coming back for more and help you reduce injury risk.

Find your sweet spot
Write down your workouts, then color-code how they made you feel: yellow for amazing, orange for just OK and red for exhausted and flat. It's a visual way of seeing how your body responds and will help you pick up patterns. For example, if you're always orange or red around the end of the week, that's a sign that you should be doing lighter workouts on those days.

Maintenance
Use a foam roller three times a week to improve flexibility—it helps reduce injury better than static stretching. If you are not sure how to use one, come and see me at the Dolphins Health Precinct.

Train Smart
In order to get stronger your body needs time to rebuild. Mix easy days with tough training days and avoid pushing when your body needs a break.

The Mental Game
Confidence springs from putting in the physical work of hard, smart training between races. On race day, even a well-trained runner can sabotage his/her effort with negative or unproductive thoughts. The bottom line is to believe in what you’ve done to get to the start line, focus on what is possible, and use both your physical and mental strengths to produce the best outcome on the day.

Keep up with your training. The Jetty to Jetty is only 4 weeks away however our health is a lifetime assignment so make sure you enjoy doing what you do. Keep it up guys and I will see you on the running path.

Warren's Team 2015

Warren and his Jetty2Jetty Team!

for the donation of the team shirts

Warren being presented his team hat

A special mention to Warren's Jetty2Jetty Team...

Warren wanted to do the 5km Jetty 2 Jetty and knew Warren within himself it would be a challenge. Six DHP members put their heads together and created a team to support Warren on this challenge he was about embark. The Team consisted of 8 members Paul, Denis, Terry, Jessie, Peter, Warren, Kelly and Julie. Warren's daughter-in-law even flew up from Melbourne to join in and be involved!

Dolphins offered to sponsor Warren and his team by donating shirts to create the team vibe! Terry from the team then funded for Warren's team to all have hats (as Warren loves wearing a hat even when his inside the gym!)

The team did so well at the Jetty2Jetty and it was very inspiring to see the support given. After the race the team pre-planned to celebrate at the Belvedere Hotel!

Awesome Tips & Inspiration from Running Coach Lisa Maclean!

Another insightful, useful and inspirational running article from Dolphins Health Precinct's Lisa Maclean who is hosting the DHP Jetty2Jetty Running Program 2015.

Words by Lisa Maclean

For those of us contemplating running the Jetty2Jetty we have already dusted off those running shoes of by now!! The exciting news is we all have a goal - from just finishing one of the distances to trying to smash a PB, and all goals are achievable if you believe in yourself!!

I hear from different people “I would love to be able to do that” and my reply is always “but why can't you?” The old saying of “If you change how you think then you will change how you feel and what actions you take” is so true, once you believe anything is possible.

Training is the fun part - firstly we get the beautiful bay as our backdrop and breathe in the fresh air, secondly it's all about experimenting with our fitness and mental strength without any pressure at all. Mental strength is the toughest strength to build, we can all build strength in our muscles by following a program but how to we follow a strength program for that little voice in our head called “doubt” - somehow that little voice seems to win… But we need to step outside that comfort zone and turn that “doubt” into “believing”.

When you hear the words “I could never do that” turn it into “why can't I?” If you know you can run a 5km already then why can't we aim for finishing the 10km run? The possibilities are endless!!! We are 8 weeks out - plenty of time to start assessing our goals.

My tips would be:
  • To make sure your shoes are suitable for you, remember your shoes are your tools when you run they protect your body from the impact and ensure you are landing correctly and who wants to have sore feet while you are running?
  • Also remember to warm up and cool down, a good warm-up signals to your body that it will have to start working soon. By slowly raising your heart rate, the warm-up also helps minimise stress on your heart when you start your run. So you should start your runs with a brisk walk. The cool down allows your heart rate and blood pressure fall gradually, so it's important that you end your run with a slow 5-minute jog or walk, also ensure you stretch those muscles out.
  • One more tip would be to keep correct posture; improper upper body form can lead to pain in your arms, shoulders, neck, and back. Try to keep your hands at waist level, right about where they might lightly brush your hip. Your arms should be at a 90-degree angle, with your elbows at your sides. Keep your posture straight and erect. Golden rule would be keeping your head up, your back straight, and shoulders level.

All in all keep training positive and fun! Take all pressure out of your head and remember “your race - your rules” if you feel like walking to catch your breath then why not? If you feel good and think you can break down that comfort zone and pick the pace up then why not?

Ohhh I love this time of year when there are more people out running on the footpaths giving each other a big encouraging smile and sharing the same passion for running!!!

MY THOUGHTS/TIPS ON RUNNING
By Lisa Maclean

For some of you I will have your attention for most of you, you have already switched off! When I ask people to come for a run with me the response I hear is “I can't run” “Why??” I ask… With that question I hear many many excuses.

I think the word running for most people means HARD… What about the word Light Jog? Now I have your attention… Running/Jogging is like anything in life, you just need to start somewhere and keep “chipping away” at it. The feeling you get when you start reaching new boundaries with running is unbelievable and I always hear “I didn't know I could even do that!” Ahhhhh music to my ears, people achieving goals and stepping outside their comfort zone (even if it's only for 1 minute).

So if your running shoes are dusty then it's a perfect time for you to clean off the cobwebs and start at the beginning. It's the perfect time of the year with the Jetty2Jetty around the corner, the weather is cooling down to run outside or even hit the treadmill at the gym by yourself or grab a friend to join you.

My advice for beginners is just one foot at a time and my motto is “your race your rules” go at your own pace and you will be amazed. Before you know it you will be asking for a running program and reaching for the Jetty2Jetty goal you have always wanted to achieve.

So now you have your shoes and you are itching to get amongst it, what about the fact that “I can't breathe when I run?” Which is another reason why running shoes stay dusty, Well… here are some of my hints that actually work:

  • Keep your mouth open. Your mouth is wider than your nostrils, allowing you to take deeper breaths of air. Allow air to enter through both your mouth and your nose.
  • Find a breathing pattern. Try coordinating your breath with your footsteps. For example, breathe in every other time you take a step with your left foot, and breathe out every other time you take a step with your right foot. This will help you breathe more consistently throughout your run. (Experiment with different breathing patterns to find the right one for you. It will depend on how fast you are running.)
  • Run or jog regularly. Running, just like any other physical activity, improves with practice. The better shape you are in aerobically, the easier it will be for you to breathe efficiently.

Not only is running so rewarding it is excellent for your cardiovascular system, it's a whole body workout and you will see and feel results in no time at all.

Why start tomorrow or next week? Try it out today, you will be one step closer to achieving that goal you thought has been out of your reach!

How to Run for Weight Loss

By Heather Topham Wood

Drop the weight by learning a new running routine.

If you want to lose weight, running can be a good addition to your exercise routine. High intensity cardio activities can burn a lot of calories. Yet running is just one aspect of losing weight. Healthy, low-calorie eating is an important part of weight loss as well. Your meals should be made up of mostly lean proteins, fruits, veggies, fat-free dairy products and whole grains. Also, strength train two to three times a week to build lean muscle and burn more fat. Speak to a doctor before learning how to run to lose weight.

  • Step 1
    • Find the right intensity to lose weight. The Cool Running website, which is partnered with ESPN, stresses the importance of finding the right balance to run for weight loss. You need to put out enough effort to burn calories without being so intense that you won’t burn fat. Instead of burning fat, the body will burn glycogen for energy when running at maximum effort. Your pace should be slow and steady, much like if you were running a marathon rather than a sprint.
  • Step 2
    • Keep a steady pace for 30 minutes. A consistent, moderate pace for a minimum of 30 minutes will help you burn the most calories. According to Cool Running, the body switches to fat as its primary fuel after about 30 minutes of running. If 30 minutes is too long for you to run continuously, add in short intervals of walking or jogging.
  • Step 3
    • Increase the amount of time you spend running each week. Add five to ten minutes more of running each week to increase the amount of calories burned. The added time trains your body to run for longer periods of time.
  • Step 4
    • Rest at least one day per week. Women’s Health Magazine suggests a day of rest weekly if you are starting a running program for weight loss. This gives your muscles a day to rest and your body a day to recharge.

Elite Utra Marathon Trail Runner as DHP Instructor

Who better to take our new Deep Water Running program than our newest member of Dolphins Health Precinct - Andrew Hedgman.

Andrew is an elite Utra Marathon Trail Runner who is passionate about health and fitness.

Andrew, a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness instructor has an amazing running pedigree. Andrew found his passion for running in high school, and broke records and regularly won races against much older students.

After finishing high school, Andrew took a break from running to pursue other adventures. Andrew is a licensed scuba diver and skydiver and has held many jobs, gaining both experience and skills. In 2008, he decided to shake the dust off his running shoes and get back into it.

Having already run a marathon, Andrew decided to start training for, and completed his first ultra marathon – a 100 km event in February 2009 at the New Zealand Nationals, where he finished in the top 10. Since then, Andrew hasn't stopped, completing several ultra marathons to date.

In February and March 2010, Andrew completed his biggest achievement to date – a 2200 km event, running the length of New Zealand in 28 days, averaging between 70-80 km a day, fighting shin splints, a torn muscle and bad weather.

In November 2010, Andrew returned to where it all started for him, at his old high school – Paeroa College – to talk to students about his journey into running, the 2200km New Zealand ultra marathon, and his future plans.

September 2011, Andrew ran 200km in Queensland, to raise funds for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA – www.wspa.org.au). It was while training for this event that Andrew changed to a vegetarian diet for ethical reasons, and believes it was one of the best decisions of his life.

He then went on in 2012 to run 1000 km's over a period of 15 day's from Brisbane to Sydney and once again raise money and awareness for WSPA. He said of his experience that the Brisbane to Sydney run was the most satisfying run he has ever done.

Not long after the Brisbane to Sydney run, Andrew ran in the Lycian Way ultra marathon over in Turkey, a 250 km, six stage, self sufficient race along the ancient Lycian Way. According to Andrew this was the toughest and most challenging race he had ever done.

Since then Andrew has also found time to study completing his Cert 111 and IV in Personal Training.

Members of Dolphins Health Precinct can catch Andrew teaching SPIN classes as well as Aqua Deep classes - 6:30pm Wednesday nights.

Core Strength Training Workouts

Photo Credit: Leticia Wilson from Fotolia.com

The best core strength training workouts are those that require speed, strength, balance and coordination. The American College of Sports Medicine "Resources for the Personal Trainer" states that when you work your core muscles, it's important to use a combination of isolation exercises and compound movements to stimulate the most overall muscle growth.

Firecracker Push-up
Like the traditional push-up, this movement works the chest, shoulders, triceps and quadriceps. The firecracker push-up adds a jump and clap to the end of each push-up. The American Council on Exercise states that adding a plyometric element to the top of the movement forces the transverse abdominals to stabilize and work even harder, developing more core strength in the process. To perform it, get onto to the ground in a classic push-up position. Put your palms about shoulder width apart and extend your legs straight behind you. Lower yourself by bending your arms at the elbow and bringing the chest to the ground. Push back up as hard as you can, lifting your hands off the ground so that you can quickly bring your palms together--under your chest--and clap your hands. Immediately after you clap, catch your fall by bringing your palms quickly back to the floor. This is one repetition. Try to complete at least five per set. Do two to three sets.

Plank Run
This simple maneuver works your core through a semi-isometric position. The holding keeps your core engaged and works the abdominals, helping to build strength. The "run" helps to put more pressure on the stabilizer muscles for added muscle stimulation. To perform it, get into a classic push-up position. Drop down onto your forearms by bending your elbows at a 90-degree angle. Keep your legs together and your toes on the ground. Lift one leg off the ground and then alternate. Continue to move at a "running" pace for at least 30 seconds. This is one set. Do four to five sets, 30 seconds each.

Squat and Press
The squat and press is a compound movement that works almost every muscle group in your body. The force generated from top to bottom puts your core to work by requiring it to tighten up throughout the entire movement. This makes for greater strength gains and core muscle growth. First, get into starting position by grabbing a pair of dumbbells; one in each hand. Make sure you can safely shoulder press the weight you choose--with good form--at least 12 times. Stand with your legs shoulder-width apart. Bring the dumbbells up over your shoulders so your palms are facing forward, elbows are out to the side and your arms are bent at a 90 degree angle. To Squat down by bending your legs at the knees until your thighs are almost parallel to the floor. Stand back up while keeping your abs tight--push up from the back of your heels. Right before you reach the top, begin to shoulder press the dumbbells by pushing them straight up toward the ceiling. Slowly bring them back down. This is one repetition. Try to complete at least five repetitions per set. Do three to four sets.

Techniques to Run Longer

Running a longer distance and running for a longer period of time are two separate, though not necessarily opposing, goals. The term “point of muscle fatigue” means maintaining a certain speed until your fatigue begins affecting your performance. This is not the goal of every distance or novice runner, but the controlled periods of maximum exertion are part of any elite runner’s training regimen. No single technique or trick will help you run longer or improve your stamina. Only a combination of physiological techniques will improve the strength of your body and the efficiency of your stride.

Utilise Your Arms
Contrary to popular belief, running involves more than your legs. Your arm movement influences the efficiency of your running stride, and can reduce or increase the stress on your legs. For optimal forward propulsion, bend your elbows at a 90-degree angle and concentrate on moving them backward as you run. This backward motion drives your body forward with each stride. Enhancing the force of each stride lets you run longer with less fatigue.

Strength Training
Strong muscles make any physical activity less demanding. Just like swimmers and wrestlers, strength training also benefits runners. Strong leg, core and arm muscles increase the distance of each stride, without requiring additional exertion. A 2010 study published in the American College of Sports and Exercise Medicine found that after eight weeks, runners who performed four sets of jumping squats four times each week improved their running endurance by 21%.

Sprint Intervals
Varying the length and intensity of your training runs improves your cardiovascular stamina and enables you to run longer. Shorter sessions include several short runs with minimal rest between each set. For example running five, 800-metre sprints with 45 seconds of rest between would qualify as a “sprinting” workout for long-distance runners because it builds lactate acid tolerance, and improves your speed and cardiovascular stamina.

Long Runs
Equally important to sprinting sessions are long runs. Long runs typically occur once a week and are at least 80% of your competition distance. For example, if you’re a competitive marathon runner, your weekly long run would be 27 kilometres. The key to an effective long run is intensity. Running a long distance at half your competition pace is pointless. Decreasing the intensity changes your form, technique and cardiovascular exertion. Maintaining 80% of your competition pace during your long run is essential to building your stamina.
